Every article published on Shumen.UK follows a consistent editorial process. We do not publish rumour, speculation, or unverified social media posts as news.
Two-Source Verification
Every major factual claim is verified against at least two independent sources before publication. Where only one source is available, this is stated clearly in the article.
Source Attribution
All source articles are linked and credited at the bottom of every piece. We do not hide where information comes from.
British Perspective
Stories are selected and framed for relevance to British expats in Bulgaria, not simply translated. We explain what things mean for you, not just what happened.
Human Journalism
Articles are written and edited by a human editor, not auto-generated. AI tools may assist with translation and research, but every published article is reviewed and signed off by Adrian Dane.
No Clickbait
Headlines accurately reflect article content. We do not use misleading headlines, manufactured outrage, or exaggerated claims to drive traffic.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we correct it and note the correction. Accuracy matters more than saving face.
Why Shumen.UK exists
There are hundreds of Bulgarian news outlets, but almost none in English, and none written specifically for British expats. Google Translate gets you the words but not the context. What does a new road-closure law actually mean if you drive a UK-registered car? What does a Bulgarian election result mean for property ownership rules?
Shumen.UK answers those questions. We cover Bulgarian national news, local Shumen stories, and maintain practical guides on residency, driving, health, and money, updated as the rules change.
The site is based in Shumen because that's where Adrian lives. But coverage is national: anything affecting British expats anywhere in Bulgaria is fair game.
What we are not
We are not a legal service. Nothing on Shumen.UK is legal advice. For immigration, residency, or tax questions, consult a qualified Bulgarian lawyer or official government sources.
We are not affiliated with the Bulgarian government, any political party, or any embassy or consulate.
We are not a translation agency. We select, verify, and contextualise stories, we do not offer wholesale translation of Bulgarian documents.

A completely free, structured 60-day Bulgarian course covering Cyrillic, useful everyday language and increasingly complex real-life situations. There is no account, advertising, subscription or later paywall.
The Same Sky and The Stat Man
The two newest books each have a substantial companion site. The Same Sky opens up the documented history behind its fictional families. The Stat Man includes a free first chapter and worked explanations of the mathematics behind the book.
WhatChan and The Sports Guru
WhatChan helps viewers find UK football television listings. The Sports Guru is the home of Adrian's sports analysis, drawing on more than thirteen years working inside the betting industry.
DaneDesign and The Village Rejects
DaneDesign is Adrian's web design studio for publications, niche sites and e-learning projects. The Village Rejects is a small Bandcamp music project with no strategic purpose beyond the pleasure of making it.
Working on something interesting?
Shumen.UK is a labour of love rather than a full-time job, so there is still headroom for the occasional outside project. Adrian is especially interested in publications, niche information services, research-heavy sites and e-learning tools where clear editorial thinking matters as much as the technology.
